Getting COSTAR up and running after a Windows® update

Getting COSTAR up and running after a Windows® update

As part of your Windows update the SQL database service is stopped to allow the update to complete. Sometimes the service does not restart automatically. COSTAR relies on this service to be running on your COSTAR server so it may need to be manually restarted.

 Option 1

Restart your server. Use the Restart option from your Start menu to shut down and restart the server machine. This usually results in the service restating, but it can take a few minutes to restart.

Option 2

Use the Task Manager to manually restart the service.

      i. Right-click in the bottom Toolbar and select Task Manager.

ii. In the Task Manager select the Services tab.

iii. At the bottom of the page select Open Services

iv. Scroll down the list of Services (ordered by the Name column) until you come to SQL Server (MSSQLSERVR). If the service is not running the Status column will be blank for the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) line.

Note: There are a few that are similar so ensure that you choose the correct entry.

      v. Start the service by right-clicking on the line and selecting Start from the context menu.

This will start a Service Control window to show you the progress of the Service as it starts up.

Once complete, the service will show a Status of Running.

COSTAR will now be able to be opened.

Option 3

Contact the Microhouse Support Team for assistance.

COSTAR runs on the server but the client machines won’t connect…

This would indicate that in addition to the SQL Service having being stopped that there may have been changes to your Network Security that may be preventing the client machines from reading the data on the COSTAR server.

Option 1

We can check and amend the Password sharing option in your Network settings.

      i. On your COSTAR server, in your toolbar right-click on the Network icon.

ii. Select Open Network Internet Settings

iii. Select the Network and Sharing Centre

iv. Select Change advanced sharing settings

     v. In the All Networks section, under Password-protected sharing section ensure Password -protected sharing is turned OFF.

Make sure that you click on the Save changes once the setting has been changed.

You should now be able to start the client computers.
